Could solar energy mitigate the effects of climate change in agriculture?

Agricultural solar power plants (TarımGES) are believed to limit the negative effects of climate change on agricultural land.

Yusuf Bahadır Turhan, Chair of Solar Energy Think Tank Solar3GW, said in a written statement that TarımGES (Agricultural solar power plants) projects should be accelerated to prevent the negative effects of climate change on agricultural land.

Turhan noted that TarımGES applications could support farmers struggling with production due to climate change and that flexible TarımGES projects could be designed for each product.

Pointing out that the construction on which the panels will be placed can be designed to be high or low depending on the product, Turhan said, “In addition, the panels can be placed vertically between the crops rather than on top of them. Abroad, not only systems for vegetable and fruit production, but also pastures and meadows for livestock farming, fish farms, vineyards, and beekeeping activities are included in the scope of TarımGES.”

Turhan also emphasised that Solar3GW’s primary goal is to promote TarımGES applications in a way that supports vegetable, fruit and grain production in Türkiye noting that the Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia and Eastern Anatolia regions, which are affected by extreme weather events, have high solar energy potential and are topographically suitable, could be prioritised in the implementation of the projects.

Turhan pointed out that if Agricultural Solar Power Plants were established on just 0.1 percent of Türkiye’s agricultural land, a solar power plant with a capacity of 11,736 megawatts could be constructed, which could meet an average of 5 to 7 percent of the country’s annual electricity demand…
