Rahmi Balsarı, a member of the Board of Directors of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association (EZZİB), stated that for the Turkish olive and olive oil sector to sustain a presence in the global market, it must not only rely on its production capacity but also comply with international food safety standards.
“New standards and methods have been developed regarding mineral oil residues – known as MOSH and MOAH in European Union countries – and that the tolerance level for these contaminants in vegetable oils and olive oil has been reduced to virtually zero, a situation which poses a serious risk to olive oil exports,” Balsarı said.
Pointing out that the legal limits and regulations regarding Mosh Moah are scheduled to come into force in 2027, Balsarı noted, “However, to ensure that our sector can fully comply with these new standards in terms of infrastructure, technology and logistics, and to enable it to make all necessary preparations without omission, intensive international discussions and initiatives led by our government are currently underway to have this deadline postponed to 2030. To mitigate this risk, we must raise awareness at every stage of the supply chain, from the field to the table.”
