While the price per kilogram of bananas, which started to be harvested in Adana province, is 27 liras in the greenhouse and the farmer’s face is smiling.
In Adana, which is the province with the highest banana production after Mersin and Antalya, the number of greenhouses where bananas, the new favourite of producers, are grown, is increasing day by day. Adana farmers have boosted their banana cultivation area from 75 decares to 7 thousand 558 decares in 5 years thanks to the state supports provided since 2017. Of the 850 thousand tonnes of bananas produced throughout the country, approximately 45 thousand tonnes are harvested in Adana.
Thanks to the increase in banana cultivation areas and the customs tax of 145.8 percent, imports were also prevented.
On the other hand, approximately 45 thousand tonnes of bananas, which are planted on 7 thousand 558 decares of land in the province, are targeted to be harvested. Mehmet Akın Doğan, Head of the Yüreğir Chamber of Agriculture, said that banana production has soared considerably in recent years, especially in the provinces bordering the Mediterranean Sea, and that most of the country’s need has started to be met with domestic production.
‘The cost per kilogram of banana is 20 liras’
“Government incentives contributed a lot to the increase in banana production. As of 1 January 2024, a quota was imposed on banana production. We are currently one of the self-sufficient countries in banana in our country and we meet all our needs. If the customs duty had not been imposed, banana production would not have surged so much. While the prices were 35-36 liras 10 days ago, the price per kilogram of banana is currently 27 liras. The cost is 20 liras and we get 5 tonnes of yield in some banana greenhouses and 6-8 tonnes in others,” Doğan said.
‘Adana ranks 3rd in banana production’
Stating that banana greenhouses are no longer established within the scope of agricultural planning, Doğan added, “There is banana production in 7 thousand 558 decares of land in Adana. As Adana province, we rank 3rd in banana production. Banana production was banned because production planning has been prepared and the bananas currently produced in Türkiye meet the country’s needs. With the support of our state, we continue our efforts to make Adana a brand and a leading region in domestic banana production.”
