The total exports of the cereals, pulses, oilseeds and products sector, which includes basic food products such as biscuits, wheat flour, vegetable oils, sugary and cocoa products and pasta, soared by 3.3 percent to 6.8 billion dollars at the end of 7 months of the year.
In this period, the exports of the sector rose by 10 percent on quantity basis and reached 7.2 million tonnes in total. In the 7-month period in which the revenue obtained from Iraq, which exported the most, increased by 9.8 percent and reached 1.2 billion dollars, the USA, which exported 370 million dollars, ranked second. In this period, biscuit-cake exports from product groups were 946.3 million dollars, vegetable oil exports were 826.5 million dollars and wheat flour exports were 770.8 million dollars.
“Pulses will be at the top of the fight against food inflation”
Referring to the impact of developments in the global pulses market on domestic prices, Ahmet Tiryakioğlu, Chairman of the Turkish Exporters’ Assembly (TIM) Cereals, Pulses, Oil Seeds and Products Sector Board, said that forecasts for global agricultural production indicate that there will be a decrease in lentil and chickpea production this year compared to last year.
“It is thought that adverse weather conditions in producing countries such as Canada and India are effective in this decline of more than 3 percent in the production of both products. On the other hand, we are having a very prosperous year in dry bean production both in the world and in Türkiye. According to our forecasts, we will ramp up our total dry bean production by 12.5 percent to 270 thousand tonnes this year. Productivity in agricultural production is of great importance in order to bring the food inflation, which has increased in recent years, at least close to the consumer price index,” Tiryakioğlu said.
“In line with the current supply, domestic pulse prices in Türkiye are currently below import costs. With the effect of the expected hikes in production in the new season, pulses will be among the products that contribute to the fight against inflation,” Tiryakioğlu added…
