Abdullah Özdemir, Chairperson of the Mersin Commodity Exchange, stated that pulses have a protein level close to meat and meat products and stand out as an economical food source in his speech at the 10 February World Pulses Day events.

‘PULSES ARE A HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FOOD GROUP’
In the event organised in Mersin with the slogan ‘Pulses for Healthy Nutrition and Healthy Life’, various products made from pulses were introduced and a menu consisting of 12 different dishes prepared entirely using pulses was presented to the guests.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Abdullah Özdemir emphasised that pulses are one of the healthiest and most economical plant food sources with their high protein, vitamin and mineral content. Stating that pulses play an important role in the prevention of many health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, Özdemir said, “Pulses are a human-friendly, earth-friendly and environmentally friendly product group.”

Pointing out that pulses support agricultural sustainability thanks to its low need for water and its ability to bind nitrogen in the air to the soil, Özdemir added, “Pulses, which are ideal for arid and barren regions, support continuous and high-yielding production by increasing soil fertility as well.”
