The extreme heat and drought affecting southeastern Anatolian province of Şanlıurfa negatively impacted fresh and dried tomato production.

Ahmet Eyyüpoğlu, Head of the Şanlıurfa Chamber of Agriculture, told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that tomatoes were planted on approximately 200,000 decares last year in the Siverek and Hilvan districts, where tomato cultivation is concentrated. Producers, unable to achieve the expected yield due to the drought, are now growing on 100,000 decares this year.
Heat positively impacts flavour but negatively impacts yield…
Eyyüpoğlu, explaining the high quality of tomatoes grown in the region, said:
“Dried tomatoes are exported to various cuisines around the world, especially Europe. While the heat enhances flavour for drying, it reduces yield. Normally, 12-13 tonnes of tomatoes are harvested per decare, this year the yield was between 8-10 tonnes.”
