“Pulses production in Türkiye remains below the world average in 10-year forecasts”
Evaluating the Agricultural Outlook Report of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which was prepared for the 20th time this year and covers the years 2024-2033, Veysel Memiş said that according to the report, while a 25 percent spike in world pulse production is expected over next 10 years, this rate is expected to remain at 15 percent in Türkiye.
Pointing out that in the report, world pulse production, which is 95 million tonnes, is estimated to reach 119 million tonnes in 2033 with a spike of 25 percent, Memiş said, “Per capita pulse consumption is expected to increase by 21 percent to 8.6 kilograms. World pulse trade of 19 million tonnes is expected to increase by 16 percent in the next 10 years and reach 22 million tonnes. In our country, where 1 million 50 thousand tonnes of pulses are produced, this figure is expected to increase by 15 percent to 1 million 220 thousand tonnes in 2033. In the light of this information, in our country, which already has the potential to process over 3 million tonnes of pulses, we need pulses to be considered as a privileged product and specially encouraged.”
Evaluating AHBİB’s exports in July according to product groups and countries, Memiş explained, “In July, we transformed 161 thousand 65 tonnes of products into value in international markets. The product groups we exported the most were pulses, bakery products, sugar and sugar products. We exported 32.1 million dollars with a hike of 18 percent in pulses, 31.4 million dollars with a hike of 42 percent in bakery products and 29.6 million dollars with a hike of 29 percent in sugar and sugar products.”
“Our Association, which exported to 145 countries in the 7th month of the year, achieved the highest values in Iraq with an increase of 40 percent and a value of 16.9 million dollars, Egypt with an increase of 455 percent and a value of 10.2 million dollars, and Syria with an increase of 5 percent and a value of 7.9 million dollars.
