“WE AIM TO OBTAIN OVER 2 BILLION DOLLARS REVENUE FROM HAZELNUT EXPORTS”

Hazelnut export revenue of over 2 billion dollars is targeted…

Dursun Oğuz Gürsoy, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Black Sea Hazelnut and Products Exporters’ Association (KFMİB), stated that their first target is to export 280 thousand tonnes of hazelnuts by the end of the season and said, “If hazelnut prices in other countries increase, our exports can catch the figures of the last season.”

Gürsoy said that after the 2023-2024 hazelnut export season started on 1 September, the companies that completed their preparations sent products to many countries.

Reminding that 298 thousand 557 tonnes of hazelnuts were sold for 1 billion 795 million 189 thousand 783 dollars last season, Gürsoy said that they expect a slight decrease in the amount this season and a hike in foreign currency inflow.

Gürsoy noted that the season, which will be completed on 31 August 2024, has started well and that hazelnuts are expected to be exported to approximately 120 countries this season as in previous seasons.

Pointing out that the first month of the new season is about to be completed, Gürsoy said, “This season’s hazelnut yield remained low compared to last season. But we have a carryover crop from 2022. Considering this, our exports started fast in the first month. If we consider the first two weeks, 18 thousand tonnes of exports were made according to KFMIB data. There is a 10 per cent increase compared to the same period of last season.”

Gürsoy also stressed that there is a little uneasiness in the export market due to the spike in hazelnut prices in Türkiye and made the following assessment:

“However, there are other problems in other hazelnut producing countries. The quality of the product is bad in Georgia. The yield is low in Azerbaijan. In Italy, there are problems arising from the climate. The quality of Turkish hazelnuts is quite good this season. Looking at the situation of other countries, we do not see a very pessimistic picture about Turkish hazelnut exports. Our first target is to export 280 thousand tonnes of hazelnuts by the end of the season.”

“If hazelnut prices in other countries boost, our exports can catch up with last season’s figures. We should not be too pessimistic. Our first target at the moment is to export 280 thousand tonnes of hazelnuts. I hope we exceed this figure, this is our only expectation. But 280 thousand tonnes of exports can be easily achieved. At the end of this season, we expect to earn over 2 billion dollars from hazelnut exports,” Gürsoy added…
