Türkiye’s fresh cocoon production, which reached 85 tonnes last year, is expected to exceed 100 tonnes this year.

June, 2025, Bursa…

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the amount of silk produced nationwide soared from 78 tonnes in 2023 to 85 tonnes in 2024. In 2024, 1,631 families earned income from this production.

Mustafa Çakır, General Manager of the Bursa Silk Cocoon Agricultural Sales Cooperative Union (KOZABİRLİK), announced that support for silk cocoon producers has soared in recent years, with 1,000 lira per kilogram provided as support and 1,400 lira provided to women and young producers under the age of 40.

Noting that production has also surged over the past two years due to the increase in support, Çakır said, “Production, which was 69 tonnes in 2022 across Türkiye, rose to 78 tonnes in 2023 and 85 tonnes in 2024. We expect it to exceed 100 tonnes this year. We have seen increases in most places. Unfortunately, there has been a decline in some regions due to frost this year. If there had been no decline in these areas, we would have achieved much better production for 2025.”

Çakır, who drew attention to their goal of bringing raw silk production to better levels, explained, “In the 1980s and 1990s, we had a lot of production. There was approximately 2,000 tonnes of production and Bursa accounted for half of it. Currently, production has declined due to environmental factors, pesticides and migration, but we aim to ramp up production to over 200 tonnes in the coming years. There are two silk reeling factories in Turkey, one in Bursa and one in the Kulp district of Diyarbakır. The cocoons we produced last year are not enough to keep a single factory running. We need approximately 200 tonnes of harvest for two factories. We are slowly achieving that, God willing. Our plan and programme are in line with this, that is, to meet Türkiye’s silk needs.”

Pointing out that cocoons are also used in the field of handicrafts, for which they allocate 3-4 tonnes of production, he added, “We also allocate a certain amount of cocoons to those who want to spin with a spinning wheel.”
