According to figures from the Western Mediterranean Exporters’ Association (BAİB), fresh fruit exports, which totalled 158 million 280 thousand dollars between 1 January and 30 September last year, rose to 242 million 988 thousand dollars during the same period this year.

Cherries and sour cherries accounted for the largest share of exports during this period. Whilst exports of these products, for which production was low last year due to weather conditions, totalled 22,377,000 dollars, this year’s increase in production resulted in revenue of 96,373,000 dollars.

This year’s fruit harvest has been bountiful…

Mehmet Ali Can, Chairman of the BAIB Board of Directors, told an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent that the summer season had gone very well for the fruit sector.

Noting that this year’s crop yields were high and that this had a positive impact on exports, Can said, “This year, we experienced a very bountiful harvest in our country. Last year was a difficult one due to an agricultural frost disaster. This year, on the contrary, we had a high yield. This was particularly the case with stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines, apricots and cherries. Yields were high worldwide, but despite this, our exports performed very well.”

Pointing out that whilst Türkiye exported 6,000 tonnes of cherries last year, this year the figure reached 72,000 tonnes, he added, “We have returned to our normal level, which is around 60,000–70,000 tonnes annually.”
