Ali Kındap: Geothermal is the key to energy independence

Press release…

Geothermal, which plays an important role in developed countries’ strategies to reduce external dependence on energy, also plays a critical role in decarbonisation and clean energy transition policies.

While geothermal is the prominent emphasis in the evaluations of international organisations such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Council of Europe, Türkiye, the country with the world’s richest resources in this field, is a candidate to be one of the pioneers of this great transformation.

FIVE-FOLD INCREASE BY 2050…

Drawing attention to the great potential of Türkiye, which is the 4th country in the world and the leading country in Europe in geothermal-based energy production, Ali Kındap, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Geothermal Energy Association (JED), stated that investments made in this field provide long-term benefits to countries in terms of environmental and economic sustainability.
Noting that the installed capacity of geothermal-sourced electrical energy, which is currently at the level of 20 thousand Megawatts (MW) in the world, is projected to boost five times and reach 100 thousand MW by 2050.

“With the policy proposals of the IEA and the Council of Europe in this direction, we have entered a period in which geothermal is almost rediscovered,” Kındap said.

COULD MEET 140 TIMES GLOBAL DEMAND…

Evaluating Türkiye’s role in this investment climate, Ali Kındap explained, “The IEA predicts that geothermal energy could meet 15 percent of the hike in global electricity demand by 2050 if project costs continue to fall. Today, 42 percent of geothermal energy is consumed through heat pumps, 26 percent in district heating systems, 21 per cent in electricity generation, 7 percent in direct residential and commercial uses, 4 percent in agriculture and fisheries sectors and less than 1 percent in industrial applications.”

“The technical potential of geothermal energy can meet the current global electricity demand 140 times. As representatives of the Turkish geothermal sector, we see no reason why our country should not be the world’s leading country in this field,” he added…
