TURKISH FOOD AND DRINK INDUSTRIALISTS: FOOD CRISIS CAN KNOCK ON EVERYONE’S DOOR

Federation of Food and Drink Industry Associations of Turkey (TGDF), umbrella organization of  food and beverage industry, evaluated the 2020 Global Food Crisis Report…

With the latest developments, the statement made clear that no country in the world should consider it exempt from food crises, reiterating its demand for support for all parts of the process, from field to production, in order to look at the future more confidently.

135 million people around the world experience food security crisis…

The Global Food Crisis Network created by the European Union, Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Program has published its 2020 report. The report emphasized that 135 million people in 55 countries around the world are at a crisis level or worse in terms of food security. In the report, which stated that negative data rose to record levels in 2019, it was pointed out that more serious problems may be experienced in 2020 with the effect of the COVID-19 epidemic.

War and conflicts are the biggest problems in food security..

Federation of Food and Drink Industry Associations of Turkey (TGDF) on evaluating the report, emphasized that the biggest factors are war and conflict in damaging the food security across the world in 2019 therefore 20 million people had to emigrate to other countries because of these reasons.

Interrupted out of home consumption worries food producers…

TGDF also evaluated the Forecasts for 2020 in the statement. Expressing that the out-of-home food consumption decreased to almost zero in Turkey due to the coronavirus epidemic, TGDF announced that food and beverage manufacturers suffered significant turnover losses through the serious slowdown in exports. TGDF pointed out that the stagnation in the next month of Ramadan will also fuel this problem too.

Stagnation in tourism will also affect the food industry…

In the statement made by TGDF, it is suggested that the sector will have difficulty unless serious steps are taken to support production. The Federation statement, which expected the tourism sector to be affected negatively by the COVID-19 pandemic, indicated that this is another development that will damage the food and beverage industry.

TGDF to unveil the status of agriculture in Turkey…

In the Federation statement, which is manifested that the basis of food and beverage production is the agricultural sector. There are many parameters such as price and yield in the agricultural raw material flow for the sector and these directly affect the food supply chain. TGDF declared that it has started a comprehensive study on the basis of agriculture in order to determine the effects and dimensions of an upcoming food production problem and the results will be shared with the public in the near future.

Official steps must be taken to prevent the food chain from breaking…

The Federation’s statement concluded with the call for official steps to protect food producers and production, so that the food supply chain, the lifeblood of the country, is not broken.
