TEMA (The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats): At least 195,000 trees have been cut down!
The TEMA Foundation, on behalf of the 500,000 signatories supporting the process, urges that the number of trees cut for the Kirazlı Gold Mine in Çanakkale province should be re-determined according to the legislation and immediately stopped of the EIA (Environmental Impact Analysis) process.
TEMA Foundation stated that at least 195,000 trees have been cut down to 4 times the number of trees specified in the EIA report approved for the Çanakkale Kirazlı Gold Mine on 1 July and requested from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization to suspend the investment.
TEMA Foundation Chairwoman Deniz Ataç said: “So far TEMA Foundation has not received any official information answering our questions. On the other hand, the social media announced that the number of trees cut in the mine’s approved EIA site is 13,400. In order to clarify the difference, we ask the authorities to respond to our question: How many trees have been cut in diameters of 0-8 cm, 8-20 cm and 20 cm in 204 hectares of the EIA area approved for the Kirazlı gold mine project?”
Ataç emphasized: “We direct our question on behalf of more than 800,000 volunteers and 500,000 people who have signed our signature campaign as of today and waiting for official response.”
