Necati Gültekin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kütahya Commodity Exchange, said that the sour cherry produced in the province as a result of the works initiated 3 years ago was registered as a geographical indication under the name of “Şaphane Sour Cherry“.
Stating that approximately 35 thousand tons of cherries are produced annually Şaphane, Pazarlar, Simav and Gediz districts of Kütahya province, Gültekin added, “We made a geographical indication application for sour cherry produced in Kütahya 3 years ago and the product was registered under the name of ‘Şaphane Sour Cherry’.
As a result of the evaluations regarding the application we made to the Turkish Patent and Trademark Institution (TPE), it was deemed appropriate to give this geographical sign registration certificate which is indigenous to Kütahya.”

Pointing out that this registration will provide great advantages to the producer, Gültekin noted, “We want our producer to use this advantage well in the future. We expect the establishment of facilities for the sour cherry processing in our region. We will make necessary initiatives in this regard.”
