Packaging that stops waste; could it be a new era for food?

A UK-based company, Osy Group, draws attention with its innovative antimicrobial packaging technology developed to extend the shelf life of fresh foods and reduce food waste by 50 percent.

This new technology aims to reduce wastage by preserving the freshness of products such as fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, chicken and bread for longer.

The company has started testing this packaging technology, which it calls ‘Xtend’, on four continents and has collaborated with some businesses in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and India. The basic working principle of the technology is to create microscopic needles on the packaging surface to destroy harmful microorganisms and slow down the spoilage process of products. In this way, products can stay fresh on the shelves for longer.

Xtend, which has undergone extensive testing in the UK, has proven that it complies with the regulations for materials in contact with fresh food products and has achieved successful results in commercial trials with a supermarket chain. According to data shared on the company’s website, this new packaging technology can extend shelf life by 40 per cent and, in some products, an additional one-day shelf life can halve food waste.

Considering that one-fifth of the food served to consumers worldwide is wasted and that food waste is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, this new packaging technology is expected to provide an important solution to the global food waste problem…
