Harun Çallı: The romanticism of street milk poses a public health risk!

Press release…

Harun Çallı, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Packaged Milk and Dairy Products Manufacturers (ASÜD), warned the public about the street milk sales.

Harun Çallı, also commenting on unregistered and unidentified milk sales, said that consumers should prefer reliable dairy products, adding, “In a period where we have once again realized that health is the most precious treasure, we still see raw milk being offered to consumers whose origin, conditions of milking and the animals from which it was milked are unknown. It should not be forgotten that raw milk that is not stored under appropriate conditions and is transported uncooled to your neighborhood in hot weather carries risks of zoonotic and foodborne infections.”

Pointing out that the attempt to portray street milk sales, which are unheard of in developed countries, as innocent by labeling them as ‘natural’, ‘organic’ or ‘village milk’ is misleading consumers, Çallı said, “However, a significant portion of these products may consist of milk that does not meet quality and food safety criteria and whose content and production conditions are not fully known. It is crucial for consumers to choose reliable, inspected, and traceable products. Food safety cannot be neglected. Packaged and registered products reach consumers with traceability, inspection and cold chain assurance. This system is of great importance for consumers’ access to reliable food.”

“It should not be forgotten that our milk and dairy product production facilities and sales points are under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Çallı added…
