LOUISA VINTON: MORE THAN 4600 SMALL BUSINESSES WERE DISTRIBUTED CASH GRANTS IN QUAKE HIT PROVINCES

Press release…

Nine months after earthquakes devastated 11 provinces in southern Türkiye, more than 4,600 small businesses in these provinces will be able to start up again thanks to cash grants distributed by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under a Swedish-funded programme. The total value of UNDP’s “post-earthquake recovery grants” amounts to USD 10 million (TL 282.3 million). Across the region, 42 percent of the grants were awarded to women-led businesses.

Kahramanmaraş Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The grants were distributed at events organised in November by UNDP and chambers of commerce and industry in Kilis, Gaziantep, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adana, Elazığ, Malatya, Şanlıurfa and Diyarbakır provinces.

In earthquake-stricken Kahramanmaraş province, 257 women-run businesses, including restaurants, shops, textile firms and pharmacies, restarted or expanded their operations with cash grants from UNDP in August as part of the pilot phase of the Swedish-funded grant programme. UNDP and Kahramanmaraş Chamber of Commerce and Industry came together at an event to celebrate the success of these women entrepreneurs.

Louisa Vinton

Emphasising that UNDP will continue to prioritise women-owned businesses in post-earthquake recovery efforts, Louisa Vinton, UNDP Resident Representative in Türkiye, said in an interview with Inside Türkiye: “We hope the grants will act as a catalyst for a more comprehensive recovery.”
