Ferhat Gürüz, Chairman of the Board of the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, announced that Türkiye’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports in May increased by 32 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and reached a value of 249.3 million dollars. Emphasizing that as the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, they support this performance of the sector by 51 percent, Ferhat Gürüz stated that the region’s exports soared by 36 percent to 128 million dollars in the said period.
“The countries to which we export the most in May are Russia, Romania and Ukraine”
Evaluating Türkiye’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports in May according to product groups and countries, Gürüz said, “In the fifth month of the year, 334 thousand 876 tonnes of products were evaluated in international markets and the most exported products of our sector were peaches, tomatoes and lemons.”
“We have reached an export value of 56.8 million dollars with an increase of 123 percent in peaches, 38.4 million dollars in tomatoes with an increase of 44 percent and 22 million dollars in lemons. When we look at the countries to which we export the most, an increase of 7 percent and a value of 85.9 million dollars Russia ranked first with 90 percent increase and 34 million dollars value, Romania second, Ukraine with 47 percent increase and 26.5 million dollars value took the first three places,” he added.
Gürüz also noted that between January and May 2023, the country’s overall sector exports reached 1.42 billion dollars with a rise of 23 percent, while the Association’s exports rose by 24 percent to 667.7 million dollars in the same period.
Watermelon, grape and apricot exports started…
Expressing that the harvest of watermelon, grapes and stone fruits has accelerated and exports have started, Gürüz wished that they expect a fruitful season.
“We reached a value of 7.1 million dollars in May in the export of first-season watermelon grown under greenhouse and plastic cover. In the last week of May, Yaloca pearl, Thrace İlkeren and Cardinal, etc. the export of grapes grown under the same type of cover was also allowed,” he explained.
“On the other hand, in Mersin province which has a say in the production of early apricots from stone fruits, the yield forecast has become clear. In Mersin, which has 2 million 705 thousand fruit-producing trees on an area of more than 100 thousand decares, a yield of 196 thousand 502 tonnes is expected this year. According to the evaluations made by Mersin Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, a spike of 72.63 percent is expected in 2023 compared to the previous year,” he concluded…
