“EXPORT OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO INDIA BREAKS A RECORD”

Press release…

Mediterranean Exporters’ Associations (AKİB) Coordinator and Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association Chairman Nejdat Sin said that Turkey’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports in May reached 201.2 million dollars with an increase of 27 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Nejdat Sin, who stated that they broke a record by capturing a 120-fold increase in the Indian market during this period, said, “The positive reflections of our efforts to increase market diversity were reflected in our export reports for May. We have achieved remarkable increases in the markets of Syria, Belarus, Belgium and Serbia, especially in India.”

‘We focused on market diversity in the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables’

Sin noted that the United Nations (UN) declared 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables and that this theme offers significant opportunities for Turkey, which ranks 4th in world vegetable production and 5th in fruit production, to increase market diversity in exports.

Sin emphasized that they are very pleased with the reflection of concrete data on the target of reaching alternative markets on the export performance in May.

Indicating that 65 percent of the export market of the Turkish fresh fruit and vegetable sector is clustered in 5 countries, the limited market diversity in the emerging picture brings along various problems, especially import restrictions and geopolitical risks,

“Our industry, which focuses on increasing market diversity in exports, has started to make significant progress in reaching alternative markets. While our main markets were Russia, Romania, Iraq, Germany and Ukraine in May, South Asia, Europe and the Middle East were the countries where we achieved significant increase in exports. We reached the most striking figures in the Indian market. Our industry, which exported only 38 thousand 192 dollars to this country in May last year, realized an export of 4 million 679 thousand dollars in May 2021. Compared to the same period of the previous year, we achieved a rise of 12 thousand 153 percent in our exports to India,” Sin added.

Addressing other countries with which they have expanded their exports in May in the target of reaching alternative markets, Sin concluded, “In the countries where we have achieved an increase in export volume, Syria is the second with a 341 percent increase and 11.5 million dollars in value, after India, with an increase of 167 percent and 1.4 million dollars. Belarus ranked third in value. We achieved significant performances in the markets of Belgium, Serbia, Austria, Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
