They flew 30 thousand kilometres to export Turkish olives and olive oil to Australia…
Turkish olive and olive oil exporters, aiming to reach a 20 percent market share in Australia, which is the 12th economy of the world, with a per capita income of 65 thousand dollars and increasing consumption of table olives and olive oil, flew 30 thousand kilometres to promote Turkish olives and olive oil.
Under the organisation of the Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association (EZZİB), 11 Turkish olive and olive oil exporter companies organised an olive and olive oil sectoral trade delegation to Melbourne, Australia between 1-7 September 2024.
“We want to get 20 percent share from the Australian market”
Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association Chairpeson Emre Uygun stated that they aim to get a 20 percent share from the Australian market, which imports table olives from Greece and olive oil from Spain and has an annual olive and olive oil import of 200 million dollars. Emre Uygun noted that they held 114 bilateral business meetings with Australian importers, opened a stand as EZZİB at the Fine Food Australia Fair held between 2-5 September 2024 and had visitors taste Turkish olives and olive oils.
Highlighting that they made important business contacts in bilateral business meetings in Australia, Uygun said, “Consumers in Australia are very interested in healthy foods. Olives and olive oil are known and preferred by Australian consumers. In this context, the Australian market is one of the important target markets with high potential for Turkish olive and olive oil exporters. In order to turn this potential into exports, we travelled 30 thousand km with a round trip 38-hour flight. The meetings were extremely productive in terms of raising the awareness of Turkish olives and olive oil in Australia and establishing new collaborations. We visited sector representatives and food importers in Australia. We believe that these contacts will bear fruit in the 2024/25 season.”
Reminding that Türkiye ranked second in the world with 420 thousand tonnes of olive oil and first in the world with 735 thousand tonnes of table olives in the 2022-23 season, EZZİB Chairperson Uygun continued his words as follows; “We expect a similar yield in the 2024-25 season. If there is a year without export restrictions, we aim to exceed 1 billion dollars in exports by exporting 150 thousand tonnes of olive oil and over 100 thousand tonnes of table olives. In order to reach these targets, our marketing activities for target markets will continue in the coming period.”
The Aegean Olive and Olive Oil Exporters’ Association’s Australian Sectoral Trade Delegation was attended by Tayfun Kılıç, Deputy Director General for Exports at the Ministry of Trade, while Hazal Oğuz Sarıkaya, Melbourne Commercial Attaché, accompanied the delegation and shared information about the Australian economy…
