| Brussels, 4 December 2025 — The European Landowners’ Organization (ELO) welcomes the provisional agreement reached between the Council and the European Parliament on the regulation of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs). This long-awaited step comes after years of debate and substantial scientific evidence demonstrating the safety and potential of these tools—well before the Commission issued its proposal in 2023. ELO considers this one of the few EU initiatives that directly addresses the steadily shrinking toolbox available to European farmers. By offering faster and more precise breeding options, NGTs have the capacity to deliver crop varieties that are more resilient to drought, pests and other climatic challenges, helping farmers adapt to a rapidly changing environment while maintaining production and quality. ELO Secretary General Jurgen Tack stated: “We welcome the provisional agreement on NGTs as a crucial step toward a more competitive, innovative and sustainable European agrifood sector. This balanced framework will help farmers access the tools they need to adapt to climate challenges while maintaining high standards of safety and environmental protection. We encourage swift formal adoption so Europe can fully benefit from these advances and strengthen its strategic autonomy.” ELO now calls on the co-legislators to proceed swiftly to formal adoption so that the benefits of NGTs can begin to materialise for farmers, land managers and rural communities across Europe. |
