Dr. Şerafettin Aşık: The best water harvesting reservoir is the soil

Professor Dr. Şerafettin Aşık, a faculty member at the Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation at Ege University (EÜ) Faculty of Agriculture, emphasised the importance of rainwater harvesting in combating drought in the agricultural sector, which uses 79 per cent of water.

“The best water harvesting reservoir is the soil. Retaining the existing moisture in the soil is also water harvesting,” Dr. Aşık stated.

Pointing out that water resources are diminishing day by day due to drought and low rainfall, Dr. Aşık explained, “In the agricultural sector, where the vast majority of water is used, the efficient use of water resources, rainwater harvesting and restricted irrigation approaches are important for combating drought and sustainable production for the future of agriculture.”

The potential of different rainwater harvesting methods monitored with Smart Digital Soil Moisture Sensors for use in sustainable olive production was investigated in olive trees in Izmir by Professor Dr. Şerafettin Aşık, a faculty member of the Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation at Ege University’s Faculty of Agriculture. The Potential Use of Different Rainwater Harvesting Methods Monitored by Smart Digital Soil Moisture Sensors in Sustainable Olive Production: An Evaluation in Terms of Soil and Plant Characteristics and Socioeconomic Aspects’ project, rainwater is harvested from both roofs and the ground.

Underlining that there is a water shortage in Türkiye and also Izmir region and that 79 percent of limited water resources are used in agriculture, Dr. Aşık highlighted, “This situation is no longer sustainable. The more we reduce water usage in agriculture, the more water we will allocate to industry and domestic use and the more water we will retain in our reservoirs. Our water resources are heavily used in agriculture. We need to reduce this.”
