Dr. Hüseyin Akdemir: Türkiye is one of the leading countries in terms of producing medicinal and aromatic plants

Bornova (one of Izmir’s leading districts) Municipality organised “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Training” where comprehensive information was given from the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants to their usage areas. Explaining that 80 per cent of the oregano in the world market is produced in Türkiye, the experts stated that the high quality production of many medicinal and aromatic plants, especially laurel, cumin and poppy, will make a significant contribution to national income.

Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Specialist Dr. Hüseyin Akdemir disclosed that 80 percent of the oregano used in the world is produced in Türkiye. “Our country is in a very important position in the production of medicinal and aromatic plants such as oregano, poppy, laurel and cumin. In order to develop and maintain this, everyone must fulfil their responsibilities. In the meantime, Bornova Municipality has fulfilled a very important task in raising social awareness on this issue,” Dr. Akdemir said.

Ersel Şengel, Aromatherapist and Agricultural Engineer, made a comprehensive presentation on the general rules regarding the use of plant oils used in aromatherapy as well as the areas in which the essential oils obtained are effective.

Ersel Şengel pointed out that the dose used in medicinal and aromatic plants is very important as in many other subjects and warned consumers against products sold under the label of aromatic oil, especially by adding fragrance properties with various essences.

Reminding that the importance of shopping from reliable companies in order not to be harmed by medicinal and aromatic plant products purchased to obtain benefit, Şengel added, “The tendency towards natural products has increased in recent years.”
