According to the latest data, total aquaculture production in Türkiye is 849 thousand 808 tonnes and Ege University (EÜ) Faculty of Aquaculture Vice Dean and Deputy Head of Aquaculture Department Professor Dr. Halil Şen reported that 514 thousand 805 tonnes of this production is obtained through aquaculture.
Izmir ranks second after Muğla province…
Stating that the share of aquaculture production in the Aegean Region ranks first in the country with 61 percent, Dr. Şen said, “İzmir, with its 584 kilometres of coastline, ranks second after Muğla, where 39 percent of the production is made with a share of 30.1 percent in aquaculture production in net cages.”
Pointing out that aquaculture is carried out in 8 potential areas identified in Izmir province, Dr. Şen added, “These areas are Denizköy neighbourhood of Dikili, Mordoğan district and north of Karaburun, Çeşme islands, Gerence Bay, Mersin Bay and Ildır neighbourhood, Demircili neighbourhood of Urla district. In these regions, bream, sea bass, tuna and garnet fish are mostly cultivated.”
