Dr Erol Kesici, Scientific Advisor of the Association for the Protection of Nature of Türkiye (TTKD), unveiled that 186 of the 240 lakes in the country have completely dried up in the last 60 years and that the remaining ones are in danger of drought and excessive pollution.
“We do not have a single lake in Türkiye that can be called good at the moment and that we can point a finger at,” he said.
Dr. Erol Kesici also announced that a meeting titled ‘Let Our Lakes Not to Dry Up, Be a Drop of Water’ was held in Istanbul on 17 September to draw attention to the problems faced by lakes in Türkiye.
Stating that almost all of the lakes in Türkiye are severely ill, he added, “Their problems are quite severe, water levels, surface areas, pollution, lack of oxygen, they are almost exhausted. Unfortunately, many of our natural lakes, which were formed millions of years ago, have dried up excessively in the last 60 years and especially in recent years, as their basic problems have been postponed. In this respect, almost 186 of the nearly 240 large and small lakes in our country have dried up, while the rest have completely lost their characteristics of being lakes. Only a few of our lakes are struggling to survive due to their salinity and regional location.”
