TEMA Foundation reiterates its call launched 31 years ago: ‘Don’t Türkiye become a desert!’

Deniz Ataç, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TEMA Foundation (The Turkish Foundation for Combating Soil Erosion, for Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats), emphasised that ‘areas exposed to desertification are rapidly increasing due to the climate crisis, decreasing rainfall and depletion of water resources.’
THE THREAT OF DESERTIFICATION IS GROWING EVERY DAY…
Referring to TEMA’s awareness campaign launched exactly 31 years ago with the slogan ‘Don’t Let Türkiye Become a Desert!’, Ataç pointed out that the threat has become much more serious today. Noting that 50 percent of Türkiye’s land is at high risk of desertification, Ataç issued the following warnings:
“Due to the effects of the climate crisis, rainfall is decreasing and our water resources are disappearing. Restoring damaged forests, rehabilitating meadows and pastures and reclaiming wetlands are now a necessity.”

RESTORING THE SOIL IS PROTECTING THE FUTURE…
Ataç also underlined the urgent need to implement sustainable methods in agricultural areas, pointing out the importance of promoting techniques that prevent erosion, increase organic matter content and protect soil health.
“Now is the time to invest in nature. Because improving the soil protects not only today but also nature and our future,” she said.
The TEMA Foundation highlights that nature conservation efforts are not only essential for environmental sustainability but also for economic and social sustainability, urging the public, institutions, and decision-makers to take action…
