In Türkiye’s Medirerranean province of Mersin, areas that are not prime agricultural land are utilised for chestnut production.
Chestnut saplings were distributed to farmers within the scope of the project implemented with the grant support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan emphasised that the project will prevent erosion while contributing to farmers’ income.
IDLE LANDS ARE RECLAIMED FOR AGRICULTURE…
Mersin, which has an important place in the country’s fresh vegetable and fruit production, is turning towards chestnut production as an alternative income-generating product in non-agricultural lands. Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan stated that 450 thousand decares of land that is not first degree agricultural land can be brought to the economy thanks to this project.
ONE THOUSAND 700 SEEDLINGS DISTRIBUTED WITH 75 PERCENT GRANT…
With the 75 percent grant support provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, one thousand 700 chestnut saplings were distributed to the farmers identified by Alata Horticultural Research Institute Directorate. Mediterranean chestnut, which is known to be resistant to drought in the high areas of Mersin, has become a great hope for farmers.
FARMERS HAVE GREAT EXPECTATIONS…
The farmers who received the saplings within the scope of the project stated that they aim to bring the unprocessable areas into production by planting chestnut saplings. Farmers in the region think that chestnut has economic value and will become an important source of income in the coming years.
