Turkey meets 80 percent of the world’s production of oregano, which is among the most demanded medicinal and aromatic products in the world and whose importance has been understood once again with the pandemic.

Cahit Doğan Yağcı, Chairperson of the Aegean Furniture Paper and Forestry Products Exporters’ Association, stated that although the pandemic has imprisoned people at home, it also mediated the re-emergence of some forgotten or background issues.
Yağcı said, “The demand for natural products, especially for a healthy life, has increased, and that oregano is also used in these products.”
Pointing out that ‘We have a serious say in this crop by making 80 percent of the world oregano trade’, Yağcı added, “Our oregano exports became the most demanded crop among medicinal and aromatic products with an increase of 13 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. Turkey obtained 60 million dollars export income from oregano exports. With the effect of the pandemic, the demand for oregano has surged even more around the world. With the introduction of new production areas in this crop in the coming years, we consider that it is not very difficult to achieve the export target of 150 million dollars.”
