Abdullah Özdemir: New opportunities are arising for Türkiye in the new era of pulses!

According to the ‘Agricultural Outlook 2025-2034’ report prepared in collaboration with the OECD and FAO, significant growth is expected in the pulse sector on a global scale over the next ten years. Abdullah Özdemir, Chairman of the Mersin Commodity Exchange Board of Directors, said that the increasing demand presents great opportunities for Türkiye.

GLOBAL DEMAND IS INCREASING, TÜRKİYE MUST ACT ON ITS POTENTIAL…

According to the report’s estimates, global pulse production, which stood at 50 million tonnes in 2024, is projected to rise to 63 million tonnes by 2034, representing a 25 percent spike. While the volume of pulses traded globally is projected to reach 23 million tonnes, it was also noted that countries such as Canada, Australia and Russia will take the lead in exports.

Per capita consumption is also expected to boost by 15 percent to 86 kilograms. Özdemir stated that Türkiye’s current production infrastructure is sufficient to meet this spike and made the following assessment: “The country’s production, which was 1.56 million tonnes in 2024, is estimated to reach 1.8 million tonnes in 2034. However, in order not to lag behind this spike in foreign trade, we must rapidly ramp up our production and secure a larger share of the global market.”

PULSES ARE A STRATEGIC PRODUCT FOR FOOD SECURITY…

Highlighting that pulses are not only a nutritious product but also of strategic importance in terms of food security, he said, “The high nutritional value of pulse products, their long shelf life and resistance to spoilage reduce food waste. They are also a functional food group that supports public health.”

“The use of pulses is also expanding in the ready-to-eat food sector. The trend toward healthy snacks is increasing, particularly with urbanisation and busy work lives and that this trend is supporting the consumption of ready-to-eat pulses,” he added…
