“The definition of bee pasture should be created and how it will be protected should be determined”
Remzi Güzel, the headman of Anzer Ballıköy, a village situated in Rize province of Black Sea region, stated that Anzer honey is the most important source of livelihood in the region and said, “Brand value and recognition the Anzer honey has exceeded the borders of the country and has become a source of pride for Rize and our country.”
Stating that although the brand value is so well known, Anzer honey had to struggle with important problems, Remzi Güzel explained, “While we obtained about 5 kilograms of product per hive 30 years ago from the hives we started harvesting, today it has dropped below 2 kilograms and will decrease even more. Overgrazing ovine animals in the region enter the field before bees and eat the flowers to make honey, chew them, pollute them with their wastes, open walking paths in the middle of the pasture and destroy them from the root and create erosion.”
Emphasizing that every kind of animal husbandry should be done absolutely, Remzi Güzel added, “But in a place with a brand value, animal husbandry and beekeeping should be carried out within the scope of planning and in control. Considering that bees provide their food from pastures, the definition of ‘bee pasture’ should be created and how to protect it should be determined.”
