“We are calling for the gap between the producer and retail prices of honey to be reduced to a reasonable level”

Press release…

October, 2026…

Ali Demir, Chair of the Central Union of Beekeepers of Türkiye (TAB), stated that the price gap between producers and retailers must be brought down to a reasonable level and that the value generated from honey sales must be fairly reflected in beekeepers’ earnings.

ANKARA…

In a statement to an Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent, Demir pointed out that there is a price difference of up to three times between the price of genuine honey purchased from the producer and that of honey of the same quality sold in shops, noting that one of the most pressing issues facing beekeeping today is the failure to realise honey’s true value.

Underlining that whilst producers face low prices, consumers are also forced to pay much higher prices for the same honey, Demir said, “We want this difference between the producer and the supermarket to be brought down to reasonable levels and for the value generated from honey sales to be fairly reflected to our beekeepers; the price of honey should not be assessed solely on the basis of the label on the shelf.”

“The retail price should not be below 700–800 lira”

Drawing attention to the fact that beekeepers bear the costs of colony maintenance, feeding, transport, accommodation and combating diseases and pests throughout the year, Demir continued:

“Taking today’s production costs into account, the retail price per kilogramme of genuine, high-quality honey should not be below 700–800 lira. However, just as important as the selling price is ensuring that our producers receive fair compensation for their labour.”
