Whole milk returns to schools in the US!

On 14 January 2026, US President Donald Trump signed the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, which provides for the reintroduction of whole milk in school meal programmes. With this step, whole milk options, which have been restricted in school menus for approximately 15 years, will once again be included in the school milk programme.

The law signed by Trump reverses the decision made under the ‘Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act’ passed during the Obama administration in 2010, which mandated that only low-fat or skimmed milk be served in school meals. Under the new regulation, schools will be able to offer whole milk, 2% milk, 1% milk, skimmed milk, and lactose-free milk options. In addition, plant-based milk alternatives with adequate nutritional value may also be provided to students at the request of parents.

The law signed by Trump covers approximately 30 million students participating in the National School Lunch Programme (NSLP). According to information from the US Department of Agriculture, all these milk options will be pasteurised products.

Supporters of the law argue that whole milk has high nutritional value and that milk consumption has declined because some children did not prefer the low-fat milk previously offered. Therefore, it is stated that this step is important in terms of ensuring that more students drink milk and improving nutritional quality…
