Halil Tandoğan, Head of the Van Beekeepers’ Association, stated that global warming, which has been occurring for years, has caused a decline in honey yields every year and that beekeepers will face difficult times if measures are not taken.

Halil Tandoğan, Head of the Van Beekeepers’ Association, informed that there are 600 beekeepers and approximately 140,000 hives in eastern Anatolia province of Van and that they produce approximately 2,800 tonnes of honey each year. Emphasising that Van province has a rich flora, Tandoğan said, “Our region is not greatly affected by drought because of its high altitude. This is our advantage. However, if the weather and global warming continue, we will face a serious crisis in the coming years. Therefore, necessary precautions and measures must be taken.”
Tandoğan highlighted that 2,280 tonnes of honey are produced annually in Van region, adding, “Looking back at the last 30 years, we are facing a serious drought. There is a decline in honey production and this trend is continuing. Global warming and drought are at our doorstep. We are facing a serious risk. At times, we struggle to get through the season. This year is not particularly risky, but if no measures are taken, our beekeepers will face difficult times.”
