Dr. Mustafa Sarı: Fish quantity halved in 24 years!

Bandırma (a district of Balıkesir province) Onyedi Eylül University Faculty of Maritime Faculty, Department of Maritime Business Management Professor Dr. Mustafa Sarı warned that if ecosystem-based fishery management is not adopted, the amount of fish caught will gradually decrease and species such as anchovy, horse mackerel and bluefish will disappear.

Professor Dr. Mustafa Sarı, Lecturer at the Department of Maritime Business Management, Faculty of Maritime Studies, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University Maritime Faculty, said that the production provided by fishing within the world aquaculture production is gradually decreasing and the main reasons for this situation are factors such as overfishing, pollution, the effect of dominant species on other species, the increase in invasive species due to global warming and the change in biodiversity as a natural consequence of this and the failure to achieve the desired success in inspections and controls.

“THE AMOUNT OF FISH DECREASED BY HALF IN 24 YEARS”

Drawing attention that the amount of fishery production, including hunting and aquaculture, is over 800 thousand tonnes, Dr. Sarı said, “We catch 300 thousand tonnes of this 800 thousand tonnes from the seas. The remaining amount is 500 thousand tonnes. We obtain this through aquaculture. However, when we go back to 2000, hunting was 600 thousand tonnes and aquaculture was around 60 thousand tonnes. In other words, the catch has halved in 24 years.”

“From 600 thousand tonnes to 300 thousand tonnes. We lost 300 thousand tonnes of fish. On the other hand, we have achieved a very good momentum in aquaculture and in parallel with this momentum, we are growing almost twice as much fish as we catch,” Dr. Sarı added…
