“We hope this rainy period to continue in Konya region”

In Konya Plain, Türkiye’s granary, low rainfall until February opened the door to drought, while the occasional rainfall increased the hopes for yield. Stating that the precipitation is estimated to contribute positively to the increase in yield, experts warn against some negativities in the field as the air temperatures are above seasonal norms.

50 PER CENT INCREASE IN RAINFALL COMPARED TO LAST YEAR…

In Konya Plain, 47 percent of the 38 thousand 873 square kilometres of surface area is used as agricultural land. In the 2023 grain season in the plain, the yield was recorded as over 2 million tonnes with the rise in yield and quality of grain products. In the rainfall periodic reports this year, there has been an increase of approximately 50 per cent in precipitation in the last 5 months compared to the same months of last year. Rainfall, which has been effective from time to time in recent days, makes farmers smile.

THERE IS A 15 PER CENT DECREASE IN PRECIPITATION PERIOD COMPARED TO THE AVERAGE OF LONG YEARS…

Indicating that there will be no problem in the plain if the precipitation continues in this way, Burak Kırkgöz, Konya Branch Chairperson of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers (ZMO), said that the precipitation continues intermittently in Konya region.

“These precipitations have a very serious importance especially in grain fields. When we look from October to this time, we have approximately 50 per cent surge in precipitation compared to last year. Of course, we have an increase of 50 per cent compared to last year, but there is a decrease of 15 per cent in the precipitation period compared to the average of many years. Unfortunately, we could not get the snowfall we expected this year. This year’s snowfall was replaced by rainfall,” he said.

“Of course, the importance of the current precipitation is very high in the barren areas where most of the plain is a cereal area. Especially in this period, the most important factor affecting the yield of cereals in the tillering period is the precipitation that will fall in this period. The 2 days of rainfall in the past days caused a very serious relief in the cultivated grain fields in the basin. Our farmers with irrigation facilities had made their preparations. They were going to irrigate their crops, but they suspended their irrigation after these rains. Considering the serious cost hikes, irrigation costs are also very serious. I hope that these rains will continue in the coming periods,” he added…
