Press release…

Veysel Memiş, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean Cereals, Pulses, Oil Seeds and Products Exporters’ Association (AHBİB), stated that according to the Agricultural Outlook Report of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) covering the years 2024-2033, pulses production, which is 95 million tonnes worldwide, is estimated to increase by 25 percent to 119 million tonnes in the 10-year projection, and that the world pulses trade, which is 19 million tonnes, is expected to increase by 16 percent in the said period and reach 22 million tonnes.

‘It is essential to utilise the fallow agricultural lands in our country with pulses cultivation’

Emphasising that in 10-year forecasts, pulses production in Türkiye is 10 points below the world average, Veysel Memiş said, “According to the data for 2024, the amount of production in the country is 1 million 345 thousand tonnes.”

Pointing out that Anatolia is the homeland of pulses and Turkish pulses are preferred all over the world with their unique flavour as original products, Veysel Memiş noted that 637 million dollars of income was generated from 750 thousand 700 tonnes of pulses exports last year across the country.

“Our exporter companies, which have a processing capacity of 4 million tonnes across the country, are experiencing a shortage of raw materials, in this case, it becomes essential to make use of fallow agricultural lands by planting pulses in order to close the supply deficit. As the sector, we need to develop strategies to increase production. We believe that it would be of great benefit to incentivise and even make it compulsory to plant pulses in the same field every three years. If we make use of our agricultural lands by planting pulses instead of leaving them fallow, we can double the annual production amount of approximately 1.3 million tonnes,” he added…
