“Turkish economy maintains growth trend, but contraction in agricultural sector raises concerns!”

Commenting on the Turkish economy’s second quarter growth figures announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), Fevzi Çondur, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Aydın Commodity Exchange, noted that while the Turkish economy continues its growth trend, the contraction in the agricultural sector is causing concern and offered solutions. Çondur emphasised the need to accelerate the agriculture-based industry and export-oriented model.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announced the growth figures for the second quarter of 2025. Accordingly, the Turkish economy grew by 4.8 per cent in the second quarter of the year, extending its growth trend to the 20th consecutive quarter. However, contrary to the overall growth in the economy, the agricultural sector continued its downward trend. The sector, which shrank by 2.0 per cent in the first quarter of the year, contracted by 3.5 per cent in the second quarter.

‘Agricultural Input Costs and Climate Risks’

Highlighting that the contraction in the agricultural sector, despite the overall growth of the Turkish economy, should be closely monitored, Çondur said, “The costs of our producers’ basic inputs (fertiliser, seeds, fuel, etc.) have increased significantly. However, product prices have not risen at the same rate. This situation is putting our farmers in a difficult position. This situation is causing producers to move away from production. In addition, drought, which has intensified in recent years and the frost events in April have negatively affected agricultural production.”

“Türkiye is facing its most severe drought in 60 years. This process has caused serious losses, particularly in grain, vegetable and fruit production. In some regions, wheat yields have halved and there have been dramatic losses in fruit harvests,” Çondur added…
