Disruptions Are Call to “Reimagine Trade”, WTO DG Says

New WTO figures show that trade in both food and agricultural goods grew 7 percent in the first six months of this year, compared to the same period last year – although prospects for 2026 now appear gloomier than previously.

The 7 October update of the WTO’s “Global Trade Outlook and Statistics”  report finds that a surge in North American imports ahead of expected tariff hikes was among factors leading to more robust global merchandise trade than previously expected.

WTO economists now anticipate trade in goods will grow by 2.4 percent in 2025, an increase on their 0.9 percent forecast in August. At the same time, the projection for 2026 has been lowered to 0.5 percent (down from 1.8 percent).

“Trade resilience in 2025 is thanks in no small part to the stability provided by the rules-based multilateral trading system”, said WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in a statement accompanying the release of the revised report.

“Today’s disruptions to the global trade system are a call to action for nations to reimagine trade and together lay a stronger foundation that delivers greater prosperity for people everywhere,” she said.
