Sinan Kızıltan: Turkish salmon exports soared by 31 percent in 2024

Press release…

Sinan Kızıltan, Chairman of the Sector Board of Turkish Fisheries and Animal Products Exporters’ Associations, stated that Turkish salmon production and exports have come a long way and exports soared by 31 percent in 2024, from 349 million dollars to 498 million dollars.

Türkiye’s salmon exports saw a significant rise of 31 percent in 2024, reaching a value of 498 million dollars, up from 349 million dollars the previous year.

This growth can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Turkish fisheries sector and universities. Over the past five years, Turkish salmon exports have increased by a remarkable 17 times. The appeal of Turkish salmon lies in its high content of omega-3 fatty acids and as a source of protein, aligning with the growing global demand for healthy nutrition.

The Black Sea region in the country is particularly conducive to salmon farming due to its favourable water and climatic conditions. The utilization of advanced farming technologies and the establishment of modern facilities have also contributed to the enhanced efficiency and higher production of salmon.

“The Turkish fisheries sector has experienced significant success in recent years, with exports of Turkish salmon reaching over 2 billion 19 million dollars in 2024, a 34-fold increase from the 2000s. With over 60 companies exporting Turkish salmon, the sector is aiming to further increase its exports and reach a target of 2.5 billion dollars by 2027,” Kızıltan said.

In terms of production, Türkiye’s annual fishery output exceeded 1 million tonnes in 2023. Aquaculture accounts for 55 percent of the total production, with 556 thousand tonnes of aquaculture products being obtained through modern facility investments. Türkiye has set its sights on reaching the annual export levels of 15 billion dollars achieved by Norway in the aquaculture sector….
