Izmir Chamber of Commerce took action for nearly 300 thousand fishermen working unregistered throughout Türkiye. Şahin Çakan, Member of the Board of Directors of Izmir Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of Izmir Fisheries Working Committee, announced that they are waiting for incentives from the government to register the fishermen to the Social Security Institution and said, “We conveyed the issue to our Minister of Labour and Social Security Mr. Vedat Işıkhan during his visit to our Chamber. We believe that the most important problem of our sector will be solved in a short time.”

“The ‘fishing’ sector, which serves with 18 thousand licensed fishing boats, many breeders and producers, approximately 1000 auxiliary support personnel boats throughout the country, requested support from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to prevent ‘unregistered work,'” he noted.

“EMPLOYERS FACE SERIOUS PROBLEMS”

Pointing out that unregistered employees cause great tax loss, IZTO Board Member Şahin Çakan explained, “In the current operation, the employer and the fishermen working on the ship divide the earnings between them since they work with a common share. Although the employer wants to insure the fishermen working on the ship, the employees are reluctant to share the insurance cost in half and do not want to register with the Social Security Institute (SSI) in order not to cut the direct or indirect support they receive from the state. However, accidents that cause fatal or permanent disabilities can occur every year. This confronts the employer with serious problems.”
