Mustafa Altuğ Atalay: Nearly 1 million tonnes of fish were obtained last year

TÜRKİYE HOSTED THE FISHERIES SCIENCE FORUM

Mustafa Altuğ Atalay, General Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, made an assessment on the developments in the fisheries sector. Stating that Türkiye hosted the largest Fisheries Science Forum (Fish Forum) of the Mediterranean and Black Sea in Antalya last week, Atalay said that the issue of making fisheries more sustainable in the world was discussed at the forum.

Pointing out that the world’s seas are under pressure due to climate change and non-native invasive species, Atalay underlined that solutions to the problems experienced in the seas were discussed at the forum and that the resulting suggestions would be presented to policy makers. Atalay indicated that organising the forum in Türkiye, one of the world’s leading fishing countries, will contribute to the sector.

TÜRKİYE STANDS OUT IN FISH PRODUCTION AND FISHING

Reminding that fish production in the country is carried out through hunting and aquaculture, Atalay emphasized that Turkey stands out in Europe in terms of both capability and hunting power in fisheries.

Pointing out that the country ranks first in Europe especially in aquaculture, Atalay said, “We rank first in the world in sea bass and sea bream breeding. We are the second country in the world in trout breeding. We are a country that determines the market to a significant extent and offers fish.”

Pointing out that Türkiye has also made a name for itself in the export of aquaculture products, Atalay added, “Fish products are exported to more than 100 countries. In addition, last year was highly productive in terms of fisheries. A record was broken last year in aquaculture and hunting products. Nearly 1 million tonnes of fish were obtained last year. This year we have a target of over 575 thousand tonnes of aquaculture.”

“We have now included fish farming within the scope of production planning. Rather than producing too much, we aim to produce exactly according to the need and in a way to provide an optimum price policy. We will produce both salmon, sea bass, sea bream and mussels.,” Atalay concluded…
