Emphasising that apricot is the product that provides the most added value to the economy of Malatya despite the earthquake, Ramazan Özcan, President of Malatya Commodity Exchange, said, “The apricot harvest in our province has recently ended. While the producers put their products in the warehouses, we started to export intensively as of 1 August. In August, we exported a significant amount by performing above the average of last year. In August, we exported over 7 thousand tonnes in total and earned a total income of over 36 million dollars. As of September, our exports continue.”

Noting that there are problems in the sector in terms of human labour force, Özcan explained, “In August, we exported over 430 tonnes of apricot kernels and earned 1 million 140 thousand dollars. One of the most important competitors of apricot kernels is almonds, but we continue to export intensively in apricot kernels despite the favourable prices. Our target is to export 5 thousand tonnes and generate an income of over 10 million dollars.”
“We believe that we will achieve this target if there is no problem on a global scale. Despite the negativities caused by the earthquake, apricot stands out as an important actor in economic recovery with the physical improvements in the region. We are working with an intense effort to gain an important place in the national economy by making a great contribution to the provincial economy in apricot kernel exports,” Özcan added…
