“NATURAL AGRIPRODUCT PRESERVATIVES EXTEND THE SHELF LIFE OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES”

Buse Berber Örçen, Senior Manager of Nanomik Biotechnology, which was established to produce an alternative to synthetic pesticides, said that the natural food preservatives they developed extend the shelf life of not only packaged foods, but also fruits and vegetables.

Chemical substances called pesticides are used in many products in order to remove microorganisms and pests that damage food and to control pests that cause disease.

Various studies are carried out in the world and in Türkiye to develop alternative natural preservatives to these pesticides, many of which are harmful to human health and the environment. Buse Berber Örçen, the CEO of Nanomik Biotechnology, which was established for this purpose, gave information about the products they developed to the Anatolian Agency (AA) correspondent.

Örçen stated that synthetic preservatives remain undissolved in nature for a long time and harm the ecosystem and especially as the effects of the climate crisis become evident, restrictions on the use of synthetic pesticides have been introduced with the Green Agreement, which is one of the most important steps taken regarding sustainability in the world.

“Gradually, synthetic and non-degradable pesticides began to be banned in our country. As a result, these prohibitions actually caused the birth of a brand new market. This market is the product group that we call the biopesticide market, where biological preservatives are used to prevent agricultural pests,” she added…
