Menemen Plain of Izmir, one of Turkey’s major production cotton centres, first cotton seeds of the season met with the soil. Meanwhile being exempt from curfew, farmers continue to produce.
One of Turkey’s major cotton production centres, in Izmir Menemen Plain, cotton seeds were brought together with the soil. Stating that 120 thousand decares of cotton will be planted in the district, Metin Karagöl, the Chairman of Menemen Chamber of Agriculture, noted that the yield expectations are 60 thousand tons.
While the new type of coronavirus outbreak affects social life negatively, it also affects the world economy and trade. However, the most important sector for Turkey in agriculture, farmers will continue to selflessly without interrupting production. Exempt from curfew, farmers keep on to producing. Farmers in the Menemen Plain of Izmir, one of the leading cotton production centres of the country, started to bring the first cotton seeds of the season together with the soil. In this way, farmers who use state-of-the-art tools both increased yield and maximized the cultivated area.

Metin Karagöl expressed that there are 220 thousand decares of land in the district and more than half of it is cotton cultivation. Noting that there are over 2 thousand cotton farmers in the district, Karagöl said that they produce using the latest technology.
Pointing out that they have got above the European average of yields and added, “We use the new agricultural techniques, we make maximum use of the soil. With the satellite steering system, we make sowing. This is a very successful system for not making mistakes during planting intervals and preventing loss of yield.
“We are planting in a way that we can benefit from the sun. Apart from that, our machines are very new in harvest. There are packed picking machines. We collect all the cotton in Menemen Plain in 20- 25 days,” Karagöl concluded…
