UNDERCOVER BANANA PRODUCTION INCREASED BY 3.5 TIMES IN TURKEY…

It was reported that undercover banana production rose by 3.5 times in the last 5 years in Turkey during the “Banana E-Workshop” held in Antalya province.

According to the statement made by the Antalya Commodity Exchange, the “Banana E-Workshop”, which was organized online in cooperation with the Antalya Agriculture and Forestry Directorate and the Antalya Agriculture Council, has come to an end.

In the report, which stated that bananas are produced in 135 countries and it was also noted that it ranks 4th after wheat, corn and rice in terms of production amount and ranks first among fruits too.

According to the report, India ranks first in banana production with a share of 26 percent in world production with 30.5 million tonnes in 2019. The export value of the banana trade is 13.5 billion dollars, with the USA, China, Belgium and the Netherlands being the leading countries importing bananas in the world.

The report summarized the situation in banana production and trade in Turkey. In Turkey as the farthest country from the equator in terms of banana production, 728 thousand tonnes of bananas are produced in 111 thousand 544 hectare area across the country.

Per capita consumption of bananas in Turkey is 7 kilograms, while the self-sufficiency rate was reported to be 77 percent.

According to the report, banana production area has increased approximately 2 times in the last 5 years, while the yield has increased by 0.4 times and the production amount has increased by 2.5 times. Greenhouse banana production also surged 3.5 times.

On the other hand advantages such as supports and credits, obtaining a product in a year, high productivity and low labour stand out as factors that encourage banana production. Banana production is carried out in all provinces on the Hatay and Manisa line.

In 2020, 405 thousand tonnes of bananas were produced on 56 thousand 500 decares in Mersin province and 297 thousand tonnes of bananas on 51 thousand decares in Antalya. In Antalya region, which has 29 percent of greenhouse banana production, bananas are grown in 10 percent of the total agricultural land. Manavgat region stands out as the district with the highest banana investment.
