TUSAF Chair Tezcan: New era awaits us in flour industry and exports
Haluk Tezcan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish Flour Industrialists’ Federation (TUSAF), said about the grain purchase prices announced by Turkish Grain Board (TMO), “The new purchase prices and additional supports will have a positive impact on the agricultural sector. We expect our wheat yield to reach 20 million tonnes this year. By maintaining our position as the world leader in flour exports for the last 10 years, we are earning an income of more than 1.5 billion dollars.”

In the first week of June, the Turkish Grain Board announced grain purchase prices for the 2024 crop as 10 thousand liras per tonne for durum wheat, 9 thousand 250 liras for bread wheat and 7 thousand 250 liras for barley.
The Ministry will also provide differential payment support up to one thousand 750 liras per tonne for wheat and 750 liras per tonne for barley to producers registered in the Farmer Registration System (ÇKS). With the difference payment support, producers will receive 11 thousand 750 liras per tonne for durum wheat, 11 thousand liras for bread wheat and 8 thousand liras for barley. In the statement made by TMO, it was announced that the ban on the export of solid flour obtained from domestically produced wheat was lifted. In addition, wheat imports were stopped until October 15, 2024.
”It will enhance sustainability in agricultural production”
Commenting on 2024 grain prices, Haluk Tezcan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Turkish Flour Industrialists’ Federation (TUSAF), noted, “New purchase prices and additional supports will enable farmers to get a better return for their labour. We think that this step of TMO will contribute to the economic strengthening of producers and enhance sustainability in agricultural production.”

”We expect our wheat yield to reach 20 million tonnes”
Stating that they are pleased that the base price of wheat is 11 thousand TL per tonne including the difference payment, Tezcan explained, ”We expect our wheat yield to reach 20 million tonnes this year. In the 2023 season, we saw the highest wheat harvest of recent years with 22 million tonnes, but this year, the decrease in rainfall, especially in Central Anatolia, led to a slight decrease in yield. TMO purchased 13.5 million tonnes of wheat last year. This year, in addition to the purchases to be made by TMO, we expect industrialists to make intensive purchases. On the other hand, there are not many stocks in the market at the moment. Due to high interest rates, there will not be a chance to make stocks this year.”
”We have been the export leader in the world for 10 years”
Stating that they have been the world export leader for the last 10 years, Tezcan added, “In 2023, we broke the export record of all time by reaching an export amount of over 3.6 million tonnes. This year, we aim to reach a significant level of export success by pushing the 4 million tonnes threshold. With the support of our state and relevant institutions, we aim for a flour export revenue of over 1.5 billion dollars in 2024.”
