“Fresh fruit and vegetable exports reached 1.692 billion dollars in the first half of the year”

Press release…

Ferhat Gürüz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, announced that they converted 210,354 tonnes of products into value across Türkiye in June, achieving exports worth 203 million dollars.

Noting that the sector’s exports reached 1 billion 692 million dollars in the January-June period across the country, Gürüz said, “Despite wars, crises and shrinking demand internationally, as well as rising costs in the domestic market, our exporters continued to create value for our country by making extraordinary efforts during this period when the exchange rate did not support exports.”

Pointing out that there was a 19 percent decrease in volume compared to the first half of last year, but that the decrease in export value was limited to 1 percent, Gürüz explained, “When we look at recent export volumes and export values, we see that our country has begun to achieve higher values with fewer products. This situation demonstrates that the sector is showing resilient performance despite global market challenges, thanks to its shift toward value-added products.”

“We Must ramp up the Production of Value-Added Products”

Underlining that the effects of the climate crisis are being felt more and more every day, Gürüz highlighted that rising temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns and extreme weather events are causing crop losses in agricultural production. Emphasising the need to accelerate the transition to environmentally friendly agricultural practices to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis, Gürüz added, “We expect greater support for investments aimed at reducing the sector’s environmental footprint, such as water-saving irrigation systems, organic farming methods, and the use of renewable energy.”

“We believe that when sustainable agricultural practices are supported by quality-focused production, Türkiye’s global competitiveness in fresh fruit and vegetable exports will boost even further,” he concluded…
