Fevzi Çondur: Production costs are rising, support needed for cotton!

Press release…

The Joint Council Meeting of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB) was held in Ankara, chaired by TOBB President M. Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu and attended by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz along with a large number of council members.

Fevzi Çondur, TOBB Trade Exchanges Council Vice President and National Cotton Council Chairman, who attended the meeting, brought to the agenda the problems faced by cotton, an important agricultural product of Aydın province and Türkiye, as well as the drought crisis threatening Aydın’s agricultural production and the related problems in irrigation.

Serious Income Loss and Critical Support Need in Cotton…

Fevzi Çondur, Deputy Chairman of the TOBB Commodity Exchanges Council and Chairman of the National Cotton Council Management Board, emphasised that keeping the price fixed at 1,098 TL under the new support model applied to cotton is not sustainable for producers. According to cost analyses conducted jointly by the exchanges and agricultural chambers, Çondur stated that the cost per kilogram of cotton is 35.63 TL, while producers can sell cotton for an average of 26 TL. He expressed that, given this situation, producers need at least 9.63 TL in support payment to stay afloat.

Pointing out that if the necessary improvements are not made to the support mechanism, Çondur highlighted, “The withdrawal from production experienced in the 2007–2008 period could be repeated and producers could abandon cotton cultivation.”

“Considering he strategic importance of cotton production, this situation would directly affect not only the agricultural sector but also many other sectors, particularly the textile and oil industries,” Çondur added…
