Ferhat Gürüz: We achieved the strongest increase in the Iraqi market

Ferhat Gürüz, Head of the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, reported that Türkiye’s exports of fresh fruit and vegetables are dominated by the Commonwealth of Independent States, the European Union and the Middle East countries.

Ferhat Gürüz said that while analysing the exports of the sector in the first half of the year according to the countries; “In the first 6 months of 2024, our biggest markets were Russia, Iraq and Germany. We exported 436.6 million dollars to the Russian Federation, 199.8 million dollars to Iraq and 170.5 million dollars to Germany. When we look at the countries where we achieved the strongest increases in export volume in the January-June period, Iraq ranked first with a spike of 303 percent. This country was followed by Syria in second place with a spike of 98 percent and a value of 20 million dollars and Georgia in third place with a spike of 85 percent and a value of 26 million dollars.”

Emphasising that the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters’ Association, which carries out coordinator and secretariat services in the country, is among the actors that direct the development of the fresh fruit sector, Gürüz said, “We hosted the Agricultural Coordination Board in Mersin province in June.”

Pointing out that Mersin is one of the most important provinces in the production and export of fresh fruit and vegetables, Gürüz explained, “At the Agriculture Coordination Board Meeting held under the chairmanship of Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, determinations and suggestions on more efficient, higher quality production in agriculture, effective combating pests in this context, and development of agriculture-based trade were shared.”

“The steps to be taken for the future were evaluated and various decisions were also taken. We raise awareness of our farmers by adding new ones to our activities to enhance production quality and efficiency,” Gürüz added…
