“We should take precautions against this situation. As the ‘El Nino’ weather event, which causes an increase in global temperatures, comes to an end, ‘La Nina’ weather conditions that keep the planet cool are starting to be effective. In this winter period, we may not get the snowfall we want with the effect of La Nina,” he said.

Emphasizing that ‘La Nina’, which is formed by the cooling of the surface waters of the Pacific Ocean along the west coast of South America, may adversely affect the winter months, OMU Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Structures and Irrigation Faculty Member Professor Dr. Yusuf Demir called on both citizens and authorities.

Highligting that with the overheating of the ocean surface water, the effect of El Nino, which means an increase in temperature worldwide, has decreased and the effect of La Nina, which means the cooling of the surface waters of the ocean, has started to be seen, Dr. Demir added, “Winter months may be colder with the effect of La Nina. Western regions may experience a decrease in precipitation and a relatively drier winter. We may experience a drier period in the Western Mediterranean and Southeastern Anatolia regions of Türkiye. Decreased precipitation in these regions may have negative impacts on agriculture and water resources. With the La Nina effect, we may not get the snowfall we want. Therefore, we all need to protect nature, environment and water.”
